Ukraine’s drone campaign chokes Russian logistics

Ukrainian forces have turned their medium-range drone campaign into a systematic assault on Russia’s supply chain, targeting the trucks that sustain the front lines. Despite attempts to implement defensive measures, Moscow has struggled to curb an intensifying frequency of strikes that now threaten the viability of its southern logistics.

Ukraine’s drone campaign chokes Russian logistics

French analyst Clément Molin has documented hits on at least 784 Russian military and cargo vehicles, a figure likely representing only a fraction of the actual losses. The pace of these operations has accelerated sharply; while daily recorded hits averaged seven in May, that number climbed to 29 in the final ten days of June. The strikes focus heavily on the T-280 road connecting Rostov-on-Don to Crimea, with fuel tankers serving as a primary target. Russian efforts to counter the drones—ranging from deploying cannons on supply trucks to utilizing interceptor drones—have largely failed to secure the vast supply corridors.

Simultaneously, the strategic landscape is complicated by a widening gap between the battlefield reality and the information provided to Vladimir Putin. Recent public comments from the Russian president, including a geographical error confusing a river with the town of Stary Oskol, suggest a reliance on distorted intelligence. While Russian military channels report advances in areas like the Dnipropetrovsk axis, independent analysts indicate these claims are significantly embellished. As the conflict enters its 1,587th day, the cumulative impact of these logistics strikes, combined with a 70 percent decline in Russian territorial gains compared to last year, points to a slow-motion tightening of supply constraints that may eventually force Russian units to struggle for basic resources.
