Aviation volunteer bridges the gap for Special Olympics athletes

When pilot Dmitriy Pingasov took off for Minneapolis under the call sign DOVE-57, he carried more than just four swimmers and their coach; he facilitated a dream. By volunteering his aircraft for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, Pingasov joined a decades-old tradition of private pilots removing travel hurdles for athletes.

The mission was part of the Special Olympics Airlift, a Textron Aviation initiative that has paired private owners with delegations since 1987. For the 2026 Games, held from June 20 to 26, the program helped transport nearly 3,000 competitors to Minnesota. Pingasov, an entrepreneur who frequently supports community-focused aviation, described the opportunity to bridge such vast distances as a distinct privilege.

Mid-flight, the mission took a personal turn when an air traffic controller recognized the call sign and requested that Pingasov relay a message of encouragement to the North Carolina team. According to Pingasov, the gesture served as a powerful reminder of the widespread support behind the athletes. By donating his time and equipment, the pilot helped ensure that the team could focus entirely on their performance in the 16 Olympic-style sports featured at the event.
