Zelensky pressures Ireland over Russian-owned Aughinish Alumina plant

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky challenged Ireland’s new EU Council presidency on Wednesday, demanding an immediate crackdown on European companies fueling Russia’s war machine. His focus fell squarely on the Aughinish Alumina refinery in County Limerick, a facility owned by an ally of Vladimir Putin that continues to export critical raw materials.

The refinery, operated by the Russian parent company United Company Rusal, remains a point of intense friction. Controlled by sanctioned oligarch Oleg Deripaska, the plant shipped approximately $400 million worth of alumina to Russian smelters in 2024 alone. While the European Union has blocked finished aluminium exports, the raw material alumina currently skirts these restrictions, leaving a significant gap in the bloc’s sanction regime. Australia, by contrast, implemented a total ban on such exports shortly after the 2022 invasion.

Following investigative reports by the Irish Times and OCCRP, the Irish government initiated a formal probe in June 2026. Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that findings will be submitted to the European Commission, stating that Ireland intends to prevent any local production from aiding the Russian military. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas echoed this urgency, promising to propose further sanctions against entities supporting Moscow’s industrial complex. With the investigation nearing completion, the Irish presidency faces a defining test of its resolve to decouple European industry from the Kremlin's supply chain.
