South Coast AQMD Boosts Boyle Heights Air Purifier Program

With 2,000 applications filed in just two weeks, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has authorized $5 million in additional funding to combat the environmental fallout of the Palos Fire. The expansion aims to shield residents from dust and odors generated by the massive ongoing warehouse cleanup.

The governing board’s decision ensures that families in East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, and West Commerce can access high-efficiency air filtration units as demolition and debris removal continue. The cleanup involves clearing roughly 85 million pounds of food waste from a 500,000-square-foot facility, a project expected to stir up significant particulate matter.

Eligible households may receive up to two HEPA-certified purifiers along with a three-year supply of replacement filters, all shipped at no cost. Michael Cacciotti, board chair for the district, stated that the move is designed to simplify access for those most vulnerable to respiratory irritation, including seniors and children. Because units are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, officials are coordinating with local community groups to host in-person application assistance events. Residents can apply online at the district’s portal while monitoring ongoing air quality data through the agency’s tracking website.
