Forever chemicals found in majority of European strawberries

Nearly 60 percent of strawberries sold across Europe contain residues of persistent synthetic pesticides, according to a report released Tuesday by Pesticide Action Network Europe. The findings highlight a significant gap between current agricultural practices and existing EU regulations intended to phase out hazardous chemicals that threaten human endocrine systems.

The analysis of 41 locally produced samples across 11 countries revealed that fludioxonil and cyprodinil remain pervasive, appearing in 39 percent and 33 percent of the fruit respectively. Both substances are known to interfere with human hormonal functions. Beyond these compounds, 17 percent of the tested strawberries contained neurotoxic pesticides capable of damaging nervous system development.

Regulatory oversight remains a point of contention, as 56 percent of the detected substances fall into a category of hazardous pesticides that should have been eliminated under EU law more than a decade ago. These residues pose a heightened risk for children, who represent a primary consumer demographic for the fruit and remain the most vulnerable to the long-term effects of endocrine disruptors.
