Matricelf Advances Spinal Cord Injury Trial with Loewenstein Partnership

Tel Aviv-based regenerative medicine firm Matricelf has secured approval from the Helsinki Committee and Loewenstein Rehabilitation Medical Center to begin blood collection for its spinal cord injury research. This step allows the company to identify eligible patients for a planned first-in-human study involving autologous neural tissue implants.

The authorization from Israel's premier rehabilitation facility permits the collection of blood samples from patients suffering from complete thoracic spinal cord injuries. These samples will serve as the source for induced pluripotent stem cells, the foundation of Matricelf’s personalized neural implant technology. While this move facilitates patient identification and clinical infrastructure development, it does not constitute final authorization for human implantation, which remains subject to pending reviews by the Israeli Ministry of Health.

CEO Gil Hakim described the partnership as a critical component in transitioning the company’s platform from preclinical development to clinical reality. The firm’s approach utilizes a proprietary hydrogel derived from the patient's own omentum tissue, aiming to restore neurological function while bypassing immune rejection risks. This development follows a series of technical achievements, including the completion of GLP safety studies and the commencement of GMP-grade manufacturing processes for the implants.
