Insta360 Turns Diver Footage into Marine Conservation Data

To mark Shark Awareness Day, Insta360 is transforming recreational underwater footage into a scientific resource. By partnering with the PADI AWARE Foundation, the camera manufacturer is urging its community to upload shark and ray encounters to the Global Shark & Ray Census, turning personal memories into critical data for marine researchers.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap between amateur documentation and professional conservation. With one in three shark and ray species currently facing extinction, scientists struggle to track population shifts across the globe. By tapping into the vast, existing archives of divers who have used cameras like the Insta360 X5 to record their travels, the campaign seeks to identify where these animals remain active and where they have vanished.

To formalize this effort, the PADI AWARE Shark & Ray Discovery Challenge launches on August 2, 2026. Participants are encouraged to submit past footage for verification by researchers at James Cook University. Dr. Andrew Chin, a lead scientist on the project, notes that the myth that only professionals can conduct science ignores the immense value of observations currently sitting on SD cards worldwide. Complementing this data collection, a new short film featuring wildlife cinematographers and conservationists highlights how immersive 360-degree storytelling can challenge public misconceptions about shark behavior, moving beyond simple documentation to active advocacy.
