Teamsters Local 249 Walk Out at Heidelberg Materials Pittsburgh Plant

Eleven ready-mix concrete drivers in Allegheny County have launched an unfair labor practice strike against Heidelberg Materials, citing stalled negotiations and retaliatory tactics. The walkout follows the company's repeated refusal to address core demands regarding wages, health care, and pension security after more than 30 years of established collective bargaining.

The dispute centers on a contract battle where drivers are resisting company attempts to dismantle long-standing union protections. According to Teamsters Local 249, Heidelberg Materials has pushed for weaker seniority rules and diminished worker safeguards against disciplinary actions. Drivers are particularly concerned about the introduction of inward-facing cameras, arguing the company seeks to replace negotiated work rules with unilateral corporate policies.

Kevin Schmitt, president of Local 249, described the company’s stance as disrespectful toward the workforce that powers all of its local ready-mix operations. Slava Barvik, a driver with 19 years of service, emphasized that the picket line is a necessary defense against the erosion of livelihoods built over decades. The union has vowed to maintain the strike until the employer returns to the bargaining table to address these grievances in good faith.
