IRS Lifts Business Mileage Rate to 76 Cents Amid Fuel Volatility

The Internal Revenue Service has raised the standard mileage rate for business use to 76 cents per mile, effective July 1, 2026. This rare mid-year adjustment, informed by data from the driving solutions firm Motus, arrives as shifting fuel prices force a recalibration of vehicle operating expenses across the United States.

While the IRS typically establishes mileage rates on an annual basis, the agency moved to an off-cycle adjustment to account for significant fluctuations in fuel costs throughout the first half of 2026. Motus, which has provided the underlying data for these federal calculations since 1981, monitors national operating costs to ensure reimbursements remain aligned with real-world expenses. According to Phong Nguyen, CEO of Motus, the increase acknowledges the immediate financial pressure employees face at the pump and provides employers with a more accurate benchmark for compensation.

For many organizations, this shift serves as a catalyst to re-evaluate broader reimbursement strategies. While the standard mileage rate remains a common baseline, companies are increasingly weighing alternative models—such as Fixed and Variable Rate (FAVR) programs or tax-advantaged accountable allowances—to better reflect the specific geographic and vehicle-related needs of their workforce. As businesses adjust to the new 76-cent standard, the focus remains on balancing administrative simplicity with the need to accurately offset the variable costs of professional driving.
