New Advocacy Group Targets Unregulated GLP-1 Market

Only 17 percent of consumers realize that compounded GLP-1 products lack FDA approval, a dangerous knowledge gap that the newly launched Americans for Safe and Effective Medicines intends to close. The organization debuts amid concerns that widespread confusion is being exploited to profit from unverified, mass-produced weight-loss drugs.

New Advocacy Group Targets Unregulated GLP-1 Market

The organization's inaugural survey highlights a stark reality: 84 percent of consumers prioritize FDA approval and clinical testing when selecting GLP-1 medications, yet most users remain unaware that the alternatives they purchase through telehealth platforms and medical spas fall outside these federal safety nets. Fred Mills, the group's Chief Policy Officer, argues that compounding has shifted from a specialized solution for individual patient needs to a lucrative business model built entirely on consumer misunderstanding.

Alongside its launch, the group released a report detailing how temporary practices adopted during drug shortages have metastasized into an unregulated market for knockoff products. The document cites evidence of misleading marketing and industrial-scale distribution that bypasses essential quality, sterility, and ingredient-sourcing standards. With 82 percent of primary care physicians reporting that their patients often mistakenly assume compounded products are vetted by regulators, the organization is now pushing for stricter FDA enforcement to dismantle these high-risk distribution channels.
