The narrative follows the real-life struggles O'Flaherty faced nearly 30 years ago when her family first adopted a puppy. Beyond the lighthearted depiction of household mishaps, the story forces the family to confront a difficult ultimatum: keep the mischievous dog or find a new home. This central conflict serves as a vehicle to discuss patience, forgiveness, and the collective effort required to integrate a pet into a household.
Sharon O'Flaherty Turns Puppy Mischief Into Children's Book
When a young boy rescues a puppy from a cardboard box, the resulting trail of shredded homework and chewed shoes threatens to tear the family apart. Inspired by her own experience with an English Springer Spaniel, author Sharon O'Flaherty explores this chaotic transition in her new picture book, Problems with Pooski.
O'Flaherty, an attorney and former educator based in Concord, Ohio, initially penned the story as a poem for her own children. Decades later, she revisited the manuscript for her grandchildren, recognizing that the emotional arc of the story could resonate with other families navigating the complexities of pet adoption. Designed for readers ages 3 to 8, the book highlights the unconditional bond between humans and animals, encouraging parents and educators to look past behavioral challenges to find solutions together. Problems with Pooski is currently available through Archway Publishing, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
