Defense Unicorns Moves to At-Sea Testing for U.S. Navy Software
The U.S. Navy is transitioning Defense Unicorns’ software stack from laboratory settings to active naval vessels. Through an Other Transaction Agreement with NIWC Atlantic, the service will test the Unified Defense Stack’s performance in disconnected environments, marking a critical shift toward integrating modern software delivery at fleet scale.
CDR Eric Shuey, APM for Tactical Networks Technologies, noted that the move is essential for rigorous operational validation of the service's software modernization efforts. Rob Slaughter, CEO of Defense Unicorns, emphasized that the firm’s primary goal remains ensuring sailors have access to modern capabilities during long-term deployments where connectivity is limited. If successful, this integration could lead to fleet-wide standardization, accelerating how the Department of the Navy pushes updates to the tactical edge.
