West Virginia American Water Awards Grants to Seven Nonprofits

Seven West Virginia organizations have secured 2026 Water and Environment grants from the American Water Charitable Foundation. The funding aims to bolster regional conservation, environmental education, and water-based recreational initiatives, directly supporting local groups that manage everything from river trail maintenance to specialized programs for veterans and first responders.

The initiative falls under the foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing program, which prioritizes water stewardship, community development, and public engagement. Scott Wyman, president of West Virginia American Water, noted that these partnerships are critical for protecting natural resources while fostering local resilience. Among the recipients, Healing Water for Warriors will expand its Cast & Catch program, while the New River Conservancy plans to deploy a Water Watcher project to monitor bacterial pollution in Fayette County.

Additional grant recipients include the Children's Place Inc. for a sensory learning garden, the Foundation for Ohio River Education for water quality science, and the Holly River State Park Foundation Inc. for interactive mapping tools. Furthermore, Lewis County First Inc. will use the funds to equip trail volunteers, and the Smithers & Friends Community Group will bolster water testing and education efforts. These grants, funded by American Water shareholders, represent a continued commitment to the state's environmental infrastructure and community well-being.
