Chasing Montana’s Warm-Water Trophies

As summer temperatures climb across Montana, anglers are shifting focus from the state's famous cold-water trout to aggressive warm-water species. From the sprawling shorelines of Fort Peck Lake to the hidden depths of Seeley Lake, the peak season for trophy smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and northern pike is hitting its stride.

August and September offer prime conditions for record-seekers, as rising water temperatures trigger increased feeding activity. The state has already seen impressive results, including bass weighing nearly 10 pounds and a massive 37.5-pound northern pike pulled from the Tongue River Reservoir. Marta Bertoglio, director at the Montana Department of Commerce, describes the state as an angler’s paradise, noting that the diverse landscape supports everything from beginner family outings to high-stakes trophy hunts.

Top destinations cater to a variety of techniques. The Thompson Chain of Lakes provides distinct environments, with Lower Thompson Lake favoring largemouth bass and Horseshoe Lake serving as a smallmouth hub. Noxon Reservoir, a 7,000-acre expanse on the Clark Fork River, remains a primary destination for both pike and bass, hosting major events like the Montana BASS Nation Qualifier. Meanwhile, Fort Peck Lake offers unmatched scale, boasting more shoreline than the coast of California. Successful anglers typically rely on swim baits, football jigs, and topwater poppers to entice strikes. Before casting, visitors must review the 2026 Montana fishing regulations and secure the necessary licenses.
