IntelliGenome Taps ILEX to Bring CRISPR-TB Testing to South Africa

South Africa is set to integrate CRISPR-based tuberculosis screening into its national healthcare strategy as Houston-based IntelliGenome appoints ILEX South Africa as its exclusive distributor. The partnership targets the country’s high-priority efforts to uncover undiagnosed cases through blood-based molecular detection rather than traditional methods.

IntelliGenome Taps ILEX to Bring CRISPR-TB Testing to South Africa

The CRISPR-TB assay identifies Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex cell-free DNA directly from blood samples, offering a distinct diagnostic route that complements South Africa's National TB Recovery Plan. By prioritizing access to advanced molecular tools, the initiative aims to close the gap in detection rates that currently hinders regional treatment outcomes.

ILEX South Africa, a veteran in the local diagnostic market since 1992, will manage the regulatory pathway and technical rollout. Shameera August, CEO of ILEX, noted that the firm will work closely with clinical and research institutions to embed the technology into existing laboratory workflows. Kurt Wehrle, Vice President at IntelliGenome, emphasized that the collaboration leverages South Africa's long-standing role as a global hub for tuberculosis innovation to scale the reach of the proprietary testing platform.
