BAE Systems led the design and integration of the energy storage system, utilizing lithium-ion chemistry managed by a specialized safety-critical control unit. This architecture allows for increased power output without imposing a significant weight penalty on the airframe. The flight test follows a series of ground trials conducted by GE Aerospace last month, which validated the fully integrated hybrid-electric powertrain.

A modified Saab 340 B took to the skies above the Farnborough International Airshow this week, marking a milestone for hybrid-electric aviation. The aircraft, powered by a BAE Systems energy storage unit, successfully demonstrated the potential for reducing fuel consumption and emissions in commercial narrow-body flight operations.

Trudy Palmer, director of Airborne Power Systems at BAE Systems, noted that the company's battery management expertise was instrumental in enabling the demonstrator's performance. Both BAE Systems and GE Aerospace are now focused on refining the propulsion system, moving toward the rigorous requirements needed for aviation certification. This collaboration aims to provide a scalable pathway for decarbonizing regional and narrow-body commercial travel.
