The poll, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, arrives just days before the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee convenes on July 23-24, 2026. The committee is set to evaluate whether seven specific peptides should be granted a lawful compounding pathway. Currently, nearly half of the U.S. population remains unaware of the debate, yet 5% of households report using compounded peptides within the last three years.
Ken Underwood, founder of the advocacy group Peppies, argues that the lack of legal options forces consumers into a dangerous grey market. Recent data underscores the risks: U.S. imports of peptide compounds from China surged to approximately $328 million in the first three quarters of 2025. Investigations by nonprofits ECRI and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices have identified severe quality issues in these unregulated products, including purity levels as low as 5% and heavy metal contamination, such as arsenic and lead, exceeding toxicity thresholds by up to ten times.
