IBM Acquires HRL Laboratories to Accelerate Quantum Scaling

IBM has signed a definitive agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a research institution jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors. The deal integrates HRL’s specialized expertise in silicon-spin qubits and quantum sensing into IBM’s roadmap, aiming to bolster the infrastructure required for fault-tolerant, large-scale quantum computing systems.

The acquisition bridges two distinct quantum modalities. While IBM has historically led with superconducting qubits, HRL’s focus on silicon-spin qubit engineering provides a complementary foundation, as both approaches rely on advanced silicon fabrication techniques. This technical synergy is expected to streamline the development of essential components, including cryogenics, control electronics, and qubit interconnects.

IBM plans to leverage HRL’s broader portfolio in materials science and high-speed communications to enhance its long-term quantum vision. This includes the development of ultra-precise sensors for defense and life sciences, alongside the industrialization of novel quantum materials. The integration will also extend to Anderon, IBM’s recently established quantum wafer foundry, where researchers intend to refine manufacturing cycles for spin-based systems. Boeing and General Motors will remain strategic partners, continuing to collaborate on quantum applications following the transaction’s expected close in the third quarter of 2026.
