Tencent Uses AI and Gaming to Digitize Jingdezhen's Porcelain Legacy
Following the inclusion of the Jingdezhen Handicraft Porcelain Industry Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Tencent has launched a digital preservation initiative. The project combines multimodal AI datasets with interactive gaming to reconstruct the history of the world's oldest porcelain production hub for a global audience.
To bridge the gap between archival data and contemporary engagement, the company released Digital Jingdezhen: Porcelain Craft Adventure. The game employs AI-assisted procedural content generation to recreate historical townscapes and production sites. Players interact with AI-driven digital humans and use generative 3D tools to create their own virtual porcelain forms. Beyond the digital space, the project integrates with the Weixin ecosystem through a volunteer program, allowing users to participate in the physical stewardship of the UNESCO site. Zhan Shu, head of Tencent’s Digital Culture Lab, noted that this collaboration aims to transform dormant archives into a living, accessible history that serves as a blueprint for heritage sites globally.
