A review of regulatory filings and industry data reveals at least 12 funds led by Citadel alumni currently receiving backing from their former multistrategy peers. This push reflects a broader shift in capital allocation, where firms look beyond their own walls to capture returns. Investors are particularly focused on managers who employ market-neutral equity strategies, a sector that attracted over $30 billion in net new money during the first quarter alone, according to Nasdaq's eVestment.
For major platforms, the appeal lies in the familiarity of the risk-taking standards these alumni bring from Ken Griffin’s firm. Managers such as Qube, Squarepoint, and Walleye are actively funding these spin-offs to bolster their portfolios. The relationship, however, remains fluid. Millennium, a prolific investor in external talent, has previously backed and subsequently pulled capital from such funds, occasionally absorbing the founders back into their internal operations. For instance, Neville Shah moved in-house at Millennium after his firm, Kodai Capital, shuttered following a withdrawal.
