Unanimous AI Secures Air Force Contract for Real-Time Command Tech

The U.S. Air Force’s innovation arm, AFWERX, has awarded Unanimous AI a Phase I contract to integrate its Hypercom technology into military command and control systems. Developed alongside Carnegie Mellon University, the project seeks to replace traditional sequential reporting with parallel AI-driven communication for large, distributed teams.

Current military and enterprise communication often relies on a one-to-many model, forcing team members to report status updates in a series. This bottleneck creates cognitive overload and delays during high-stakes scenarios. Unanimous AI aims to resolve this through conversational multiplexing, a method that allows a single leader to hold coherent, simultaneous discussions with dozens of field personnel.

The system utilizes Conversational Surrogates—individual AI agents assigned to team members—to route information in real time. These agents act as a filter, clustering incoming data and triaging updates based on urgency before delivering them to leadership as natural-language summaries. By enabling parallel communication, the platform ensures that individual operatives can report critical developments without waiting for a turn, effectively eliminating the delays inherent in standard voice and video protocols.

Beyond the defense sector, the company views this architecture as a solution for the $60 billion enterprise collaboration market. President David Baltaxe noted that the technology allows leaders to bypass the traditional "sound-off" process, where members wait to be called upon, in favor of a flow optimized by AI. Following the June 2026 funding under the Small Business Innovation Research program, the collaboration will focus on quantifying the efficiency gains of these hyper-communication networks in urgent operational environments.
