With historic drought conditions gripping the Commonwealth, Virginia American Water has requested that residential customers voluntarily cut back on nonessential usage. The appeal follows state-issued drought warnings, as record-low precipitation and peak summer demand strain water source levels across the company's entire service territory.
Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor irrigation to alternating days and avoid washing paved surfaces or boats. Inside the home, the utility advises running dishwashers and laundry machines only when fully loaded and checking plumbing for leaks. Installing WaterSense-certified fixtures can also improve efficiency by at least 20 percent. These adjustments aim to preserve remaining supply until local water levels stabilize.
