Georgia Power Activates Moody Battery Facility in Lowndes County
Outside Valdosta, a new 49.5-megawatt battery energy storage system has officially joined the Georgia Power grid. The facility, which pairs directly with an existing solar array, marks a shift in the utility’s strategy to manage peak electricity demand by banking renewable energy for use during high-load periods.
This project serves as a precursor to a wider expansion of energy storage across Georgia. The utility is currently finalizing three additional sites in Bibb, Cherokee, and Floyd counties, which will bring the total capacity of these initial projects to 715 MW. Looking further ahead, the Georgia Public Service Commission has approved plans for nine more facilities across eight sites, aiming to add over 3,000 MW of storage capacity. These future installations will be strategically positioned near existing plant sites and substations, including locations at Plants Bowen, Hammond, and Wansley, to support the state’s rising energy requirements.
