World Cup Surge Pricing Revealed by Obi Data

Fans attending World Cup matches faced significant financial premiums, as Uber fares spiked an average of 62% above baseline during tournament games. New analysis from price-comparison platform Obi highlights how massive crowds and dynamic algorithms turned stadium exits into the most expensive rideshare nights of the year.

The tournament trajectory saw costs climb as the stakes increased. While group stage matches triggered a 59% average peak surge for Uber, that figure jumped to 72% for the quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds. The World Cup Final in New York on July 19 marked the peak of this trend, with Uber fares reaching $143—a 77% increase over standard rates—while Lyft peaked at $102.

Data from 15,000 fare points across eight host cities revealed that provider choice often determined the extent of the financial hit. At MetLife Stadium, the most expensive market tracked, Uber fares averaged $146 during match days. However, shopping between apps yielded massive savings; during a match between Brazil and Morocco, the price gap between Uber and Lyft reached $58 for identical trips. Although higher fares often correlated with shorter wait times as drivers flocked to high-demand zones, Obi CEO Ashwini Anburajan suggests the data underscores the necessity of price transparency, noting that the first price a rider sees is rarely the best one available.
