This third edition of the Z65.6 standard arrives as a response to the shifting landscape of commercial real estate, where traditional office-centric models increasingly give way to diverse, integrated occupancy types. By building upon the 2021 framework, the update aims to resolve ambiguities regarding the proportionate allocation of common areas, a frequent point of friction in mixed-use developments. The standard provides a universal language for architects, appraisers, and tenants to compare property values through a transparent, agreed-upon methodology.
BOMA International Updates Mixed-Use Property Measurement Standards
Building owners and architects now have a refined set of benchmarks for calculating floor area in complex, multi-functional developments. The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International has officially released the 2026 edition of its Mixed-Use Standard, completing a rigorous review process through the American National Standards Institute.

Since publishing its inaugural mixed-use guide in 2012, BOMA has solidified its role as an ANSI-certified developer of measurement standards. The 2026 release focuses on improving document readability and clarifying technical concepts that govern how square footage is calculated across varying building components. These guidelines serve as the de facto benchmark for professional measurement throughout North America and global markets. To assist with the transition, BOMA International plans to host an educational webinar this fall, while its committee members remain available to provide direct guidance on interpreting the new requirements.
