The report from Clockwork.ai highlights a precarious trend: 72% of the businesses currently projected to hit a cash shortfall remain profitable in their current operations. This discrepancy occurs because traditional accounting focuses on past performance rather than predictive transactional modeling. By the time a cash flow problem appears on standard financial statements, many owners lack the necessary runway to adjust their spending or secure bridge funding.
One in five small businesses faces an imminent cash crunch
A new analysis of over 3,000 small and medium-sized enterprises reveals that 20% are on track to exhaust their operating cash within 90 days. While these companies often show profitability on paper, the data suggests a systemic disconnect between accounting reports and the actual liquidity required to meet payroll.
Fady Hawatmeh, founder and CEO of Clockwork.ai, notes that 82% of business failures stem from running out of liquidity rather than a lack of market demand. The firm defines this "crunch" as a cash balance falling below the cost of a single payroll cycle. To combat this, the company recently introduced Mira, an AI-driven agent designed to provide CFO-level forecasting to smaller firms that typically lack dedicated financial planning departments. The platform’s analysis relies on anonymized data from companies with 5 to 50 employees and annual revenues between $1 million and $30 million.
