These gains propelled the state into the top 10 of CNBC’s annual technology and innovation rankings, climbing seven spots to reach eighth place nationally.
Joe Benevento Honored with 2026 Virginia C-Suite Leadership Award
The magazine Virginia Business has named Joe Benevento, president and CEO of the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corp. (VIPC), a recipient of its 2026 C-Suite Award. Benevento was further distinguished with a special Leadership Distinction, a rare honor bestowed upon only three CEOs for their sustained impact on state industry and organizational growth.

Since taking the helm at VIPC, Benevento has implemented a unified internal culture dubbed "1VIPC," focusing on cross-departmental collaboration and strategic execution. His tenure has been marked by the launch of the Lab-to-Launch initiative, which streamlines the commercialization of university research. Additionally, he secured over $150 million in new funding commitments from both federal and private-sector partners. Richard Foster, associate publisher of Virginia Business, noted that the award winners are selected for their ability to drive company success while fostering the next generation of professional talent.
