CNA Financial Reports $321 Million Net Income for Second Quarter 2026

Chicago-based insurer CNA Financial Corporation posted a second-quarter net income of $321 million, or $1.18 per share, marking an increase over the $299 million recorded during the same period last year, even as core income saw a slight dip to $324 million amid ongoing underwriting challenges.

CNA Financial Reports $321 Million Net Income for Second Quarter 2026

The company’s Property & Casualty division reported core income of $426 million, a decrease from the prior year’s $448 million, primarily driven by softer underlying underwriting results. This decline was partially mitigated by robust net investment income, which rose to $701 million. The segment’s combined ratio reached 96.5%, up from 94.1% in the second quarter of 2025, with catastrophe losses accounting for 2.3 points of that total.

CEO Douglas M. Worman emphasized the company’s focus on disciplined growth, noting that net written premiums grew by 4% while new business reached a record $718 million. Despite these gains, the firm continues to navigate headwinds in casualty lines due to social inflation. The Corporate & Other segment reported a loss of $92 million, which included a $77 million after-tax charge related to legacy mass tort development—an improvement over the $88 million charge incurred in the previous year. CNA has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.48 per share, payable September 3, 2026.
