The collaboration marks a significant shift for the waste management sector, which has traditionally relied on manual labor in high-risk environments. By integrating Cat® Command technology, WM moved operators from inside the cabs of heavy equipment to climate-controlled remote stations. This setup utilizes 360-degree camera arrays to provide operators with a comprehensive view of the site, effectively removing them from direct exposure to moving waste and heavy machinery.
WM and Caterpillar Pivot to Autonomous Landfill Operations
Moving beyond initial remote-control pilots, Houston-based waste giant WM is partnering with Caterpillar to deploy autonomous heavy machinery. By transitioning from a 2025 test of remote-controlled bulldozers in Marana, Arizona, the company intends to fundamentally reshape hazardous landfill work through self-operating compactors and advanced digital oversight.

John Morris, President of WM, noted that the transition is intended to protect employees while simultaneously upskilling the workforce for a digital-first environment. As the technology matures, the company anticipates that a single operator will oversee multiple autonomous units, increasing site-wide productivity. Caterpillar’s involvement focuses on scaling these real-world applications, aiming to standardize safety and performance metrics across the company’s massive North American infrastructure network.
