The country’s AI-driven trade rose 47.3 percent year-on-year, now accounting for over 22 percent of total exports. Data from OpenRouter reveals that Chinese large-language models captured two-thirds of the global market during the third week of July 2026, maintaining a top-tier ranking for 12 consecutive weeks. This expansion relies on a full-chain approach, linking computing power and infrastructure to specialized terminals, with double-digit growth in smart sensors and optical equipment.
Beyond hardware, China is exporting an entire technological architecture. Algorithms developed in China now support port operations in Peru and e-commerce platforms in Russia, serving over 140 countries. This strategy relies on three pillars: an open-source development model that invites global collaboration, deep integration with existing industrial ecosystems to accelerate deployment cycles, and a focus on independent innovation. Despite international trade bottlenecks, China leads in generative AI patents and continues to close the performance gap with top US models, which Stanford researchers noted had shrunk to 2.7 percent by March 2026.
