Northern California Concrete Drivers Launch Strike Against CalPortland
More than 350 ready-mix concrete drivers across Northern California have walked off the job, initiating an unfair labor practice strike against CalPortland. The Teamsters, representing workers at over 15 regional plants, accuse the company of stalling contract negotiations and unilaterally imposing changes to existing wage packages without prior notice.
Tom Gesualdi, director of the Teamsters Building Material and Construction Trade Division, characterized the company's strategy as a refusal to bargain in good faith. The union is demanding improved health care, pension protections, and a return to established working conditions. Stephen Beck Jr., secretary-treasurer of Local 853, stated that the company is attempting to weaken worker unity by forcing local chapters into isolated talks. The drivers remain on picket lines, vowing to continue their strike until the firm commits to realistic bargaining terms.
