IAB Tech Lab Refines Privacy Standards to Tackle Regulatory Complexity

The revisions, targeting the Global Privacy Protocol and Data Deletion Request Framework, aim to streamline compliance for companies operating across fragmented legal landscapes.

The proposed updates to the Global Privacy Protocol align with the Fifth Amended and Restated Multi-State Privacy Agreement. Key changes include the removal of state-by-state coverage models and the elimination of secondary usage consents, designed to simplify notice and choice fields for industry stakeholders. Simultaneously, the Data Deletion Request Framework Version 2.0 arrives following a year of implementation testing. It sharpens the definitions for identity and deletion request JSON Web Tokens while improving troubleshooting capabilities to bolster consumer and regulatory trust.

According to CEO Anthony Katsur, the goal is to reduce the friction often associated with evolving privacy mandates. By incorporating feedback from industry practitioners, the IAB Tech Lab hopes to make the transition to these standards more predictable. Stakeholders have until September 11, 2026, to review the specifications and submit their comments, a process the organization views as essential to finalizing technical standards that transcend individual corporate boundaries.
