For many students, the lack of stationery creates a barrier to education. George Onyango, a recipient in Kenya, remembers struggling to complete lessons in the dirt because his family could not afford notebooks. Receiving a shoebox containing a set of pencils and a notebook transformed his ability to participate in class, offering more than just academic tools—it provided a sense of personal support.
Global Shoebox Initiative Prepares School Supplies for Children in Need
As summer wanes, families in Boone, North Carolina, are bypassing traditional back-to-school shopping to pack shoeboxes with essential supplies for children globally. The Operation Christmas Child project aims to reach boys and girls in over 100 countries who lack basic items like pencils, notebooks, and crayons.

Samaritan’s Purse, the organization behind the effort, has delivered over 244 million shoeboxes since 1993. Participants can join the initiative during National Collection Week, scheduled for November 16–23. Donors have the option to pack physical boxes or utilize the online platform at SamaritansPurse.org/BuildOnline to select gifts tailored to a child’s age and gender. Those who contribute $10 per box online can use the "Follow Your Box" feature to track their donation to its final destination.
