The project aims to integrate the new lumber facility into the state’s freight network, with the company projecting a minimum of 421 railcar shipments annually by 2030. This expansion is set to generate over 40 full-time jobs, adding to the company’s footprint in the residential, commercial, and industrial building material sectors. Since its founding in Alabama in 1970, the company has grown to serve 28 states and the District of Columbia.
North Carolina Railroad Company Backs New Scotland County Timber Facility
A $40 million manufacturing plant is coming to Scotland County, bolstered by a $600,000 infrastructure grant from the North Carolina Railroad Company. The investment targets the construction of on-site rail facilities at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, securing a logistics pipeline for Great Southern Wood-NC’s 17th treating plant.
Funding for the rail work arrives through the NCRR Invests program, which utilizes private revenue to incentivize industrial growth. Carl Warren, president and CEO of the North Carolina Railroad Company, noted that rail-served infrastructure remains a cornerstone for reducing transportation costs and strengthening supply chain reliability. The initiative involves a broad coalition of stakeholders, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Office of Governor Josh Stein, and local partners such as the Scotland County Economic Development Corporation. Since the program’s inception in 2016, it has directed over $18 million toward rail improvements, contributing to the creation of more than 12,200 jobs statewide.
