Jingye Steel Challenges UK State Takeover of British Steel

The UK Government’s decision to nationalize British Steel via emergency legislation has triggered a sharp response from Jingye Steel. The Chinese firm, which acquired the struggling manufacturer five years ago, claims it has been stripped of its assets without fair compensation, setting the stage for a major international legal dispute.

Jingye Steel Challenges UK State Takeover of British Steel

When Jingye acquired British Steel in 2021, the company faced insolvency. Over the following years, the firm claims to have stabilized operations, ending nine consecutive years of losses through heavy investment in infrastructure and production. According to the company, these efforts supported 4,887 direct employees and thousands of related positions, contributing over £1 billion in wages and pensions to the local economy.

In July 2026, the UK government invoked emergency powers to seize these assets, citing the public interest. Jingye argues this move violates established international standards regarding expropriation. By failing to provide compensation, the company contends that London has undermined the mutual trust necessary for foreign investment. Beyond the immediate financial loss, Jingye warns that this action risks damaging the UK’s reputation among global investors. The firm has signaled its intent to pursue all available legal avenues to secure restitution, framing the standoff as a necessary defense of international legal standards and the rights of foreign enterprises.
