Since its 2020 inception, the program has enrolled 64 students, creating a direct pathway for physicians to train and practice within the state. This partnership has proven effective: the inaugural class graduated in 2023, and five members finished their residency training this June to begin work in rural hospitals. These graduates are expected to treat more than 352,800 patients across the state over the next three years.
Medical College of Georgia Expands Pipeline for Rural Healthcare
Ten new students have joined the Peach State Scholars program, a collaborative initiative between the Medical College of Georgia and Peach State Health Plan. The pinning ceremony marks the latest milestone for the MCG 3+ Program, which accelerates medical training to address severe physician shortages in Georgia’s underserved rural areas.
Augusta University President Russell T. Keen noted that the initiative aligns with the institution's mission to prepare physicians for the specific needs of rural Georgia. By securing state investment and corporate backing from Peach State Health Plan, the program provides a sustainable model for workforce development. The latest cohorts include students specializing in internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and OB/GYN, reflecting a broad commitment to primary and urgent care needs in the region.
