Researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Boston University, and Tufts Medical Center analyzed data from 2,319 centenarians' offspring across three distinct cohorts. By comparing these individuals against 2,703 controls whose parents lived to 85 or younger, the team identified a consistent pattern of resilience. After adjusting for smoking, diet, exercise, and socioeconomic status, the children of centenarians showed a 42% lower risk of death, a 33% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and a 32% lower risk of hypertension.
Inherited Biology, Not Just Lifestyle, Drives Exceptional Longevity
Adults with at least one parent who reached age 100 live significantly longer and face lower risks of cardiovascular disease and hypertension than their peers. A new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests these health advantages are rooted in inherited biological factors that persist regardless of personal lifestyle choices.

These protective effects often delay the onset of chronic conditions, with hypertension appearing roughly five years later in the offspring of centenarians. While the study found no clear reduction in cancer risk, the findings underscore that exceptional aging is a familial trait. Dr. Sofiya Milman, the study's senior author, noted that while healthy habits remain essential for everyone, these families possess underlying biological mechanisms that buffer against age-related decline. The research team aims to isolate these specific genetic or biological factors, hoping to eventually develop treatments that mimic these natural protective processes for the broader population.
