STL shifts to green power to slash optical fiber carbon footprint

4.7 kilograms of carbon per kilometer of fiber has been cut to just 0.9 kilograms, an 80% reduction for the company’s G.657.A2 product. This milestone marks a broader industrial pivot for STL as it transitions its core manufacturing operations toward renewable energy and hydrogen-based production.

The company has migrated its four primary manufacturing plants in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, to 100% green power sourced from wind and solar through the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited. This move targets a 65% reduction in market-based scope 2 emissions across its optical fiber and cable facilities. Beyond grid electricity, STL has integrated 100% green hydrogen into its glass manufacturing, addressing one of the most energy-intensive and difficult-to-abate segments of the optical fiber supply chain.

Internal corporate policies are also shifting to address scope 3 emissions. The firm has updated its vehicle policy to provide financial incentives for employees choosing electric or hybrid models. According to Rahul Puri, CEO of the Optical Networking Business, these changes represent a series of connected decisions that span from facility energy sourcing to material composition. The company is positioning these environmental upgrades as a strategic advantage for its global data center and telecommunications clients seeking sustainable infrastructure components.
