Minapharm Secures $16.5 Million CEPI Grant for Ebola Vaccine

The project utilizes ProBioGen’s proprietary MVA-CR19 platform, a Berlin-developed technology designed to elicit both B- and T-cell immune responses. This candidate is the fifth to receive CEPI backing in the current crisis, with the organization prioritizing diverse technological approaches to maximize the chances of a successful, scalable vaccine. The funding will support preclinical development and an early-stage Phase 1 trial, which is slated to occur within Africa.

Minapharm plans to conduct the initial manufacturing of the drug substance through its German subsidiary, ProBioGen, before transferring the process to its biotechnology facilities in Cairo. This move is part of a broader strategy to establish long-term health sovereignty on the continent, allowing for local, end-to-end production of complex biologics. Dr. Wafik Bardissi, CEO of Minapharm, noted that the program leverages over 25 years of the company’s experience in bioprocessing to meet an urgent public health demand. If initial human trials demonstrate safety and immunogenicity, the partners intend to pursue late-stage testing and emergency use authorization to provide an affordable, rapid response to the escalating epidemic.
