Ultraman History Goes Under the Hammer in Sompote Sands Collection

The collection, curated by the founder of Chaiyo Productions and long housed in his private museum in Thailand, offers an unprecedented look at the evolution of giant-hero films. Highlights include an Ultraseven production mask from the 1974 film Hanuman and the Seven Ultramen and original 3D paintings by iconic designer Tohl Narita. These pieces represent a pivotal era of cross-cultural filmmaking that bridged Japanese practical effects with Thai folklore.

Beyond the Ultraman franchise, the auction delves into the director’s formative years in Japan. Collectors can bid on a production script and a Petri 7 camera used by Sands during his time on the set of the 1962 classic King Kong vs. Godzilla. The catalog also features rare hand-painted poster artwork signed by cinematic giants such as Akira Kurosawa and Ishiro Honda, alongside a massive collection of vintage sofubi figures and production miniatures.

The sale coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Ultraman franchise, an international pop culture milestone that continues to influence modern blockbusters. According to Catherine Williamson, managing director of entertainment at Julien's Auctions, the event serves both die-hard fans of the genre and the expanding market for high-end film memorabilia. The live and online auction will take place at Julien's Studios in Gardena, California, with bids accepted via phone, internet, and in-person attendance.
