China and Kyrgyzstan Cement Ties Amid Record Trade Growth

China and Kyrgyzstan Cement Ties Amid Record Trade Growth

Construction on the Kyrgyz section of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway is now in full swing, serving as the flagship infrastructure project for the Belt and Road Initiative in Central Asia. This development complements a broader economic surge between the two nations. Bilateral trade reached a record $27.2 billion in 2025, a 19.8% increase, while cumulative Chinese direct investment in the country surpassed $2 billion by July 2026.

During high-level talks, President Xi and President Sadyr Japarov signed over 20 cooperation agreements, including a treaty on permanent good-neighborliness. The trade momentum remains strong, driven by Chinese exports of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products. Beyond economics, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, pledging to coordinate closely within the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to counter regional instability. Kyrgyzstan has further signaled its commitment to this partnership by joining the China-proposed World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization.
