As Social Media Bans Rise, Toys"R"Us Asia Pivots to Real-World Play

With governments from London to Canberra moving to restrict social media access for under-16s, a global shift is underway. As screen time faces legislative curbs, retailers are racing to fill the void, betting that the future of childhood lies in tangible, intergenerational play rather than the digital feed.

As Social Media Bans Rise, Toys"R"Us Asia Pivots to Real-World Play

Johnny Mui, Acting Co-Chief Executive Officer of Toys"R"Us Asia, views these emerging regulatory boundaries not as a threat, but as a catalyst for a return to physical engagement. Under its "Live Toyful" initiative, the company is retooling its 450-store footprint across Asia to function as community hubs rather than simple retail outlets. The strategy centers on the resurgence of tactile activities—such as Beyblade tournaments and Pokémon Trading Card Games—that naturally draw both children and adults into shared, screen-free environments.

This shift reflects a broader change in consumer habits, where the ritual of play is replacing passive digital consumption. By integrating immersive experiences like the TOMICA FACTORY in Malaysia and the Pokémon Play Lab in Hong Kong, the brand is positioning itself to serve a growing demographic of "kidults" and families seeking offline connection. Mui argues that hands-on creation is essential for building resilience and confidence, asserting that physical spaces provide a necessary alternative to the solitary experience of scrolling.
