MSP360 Bolsters Free Backup Software with Encryption and Object Lock

Personal users of MSP360 Backup Free can now secure their data with client-side encryption and expanded Object Lock capabilities. The Pittsburgh-based company updated its non-subscription tool to offer enterprise-grade protection for standalone computers running on Windows, macOS, and Linux, ensuring backups remain both private and immutable against unauthorized deletion.

Client-side encryption works by securing files before they leave the source machine, rendering the data unreadable even if cloud storage access is compromised. Complementing this, the expanded Object Lock support enforces data immutability, preventing files from being overwritten or deleted for a set retention period. This dual approach provides a defense layer for individuals managing their own infrastructure.

Anton Zorin, VP of Product and Partnerships at MSP360, noted that free software should not force users to choose between accessibility and security. By integrating these safeguards into the free version, the company aims to protect recovery points without requiring a subscription fee. The software remains compatible with various public cloud and local storage options, though users may still incur separate fees from their chosen storage providers.
