The AfD's Target After a Saxony-Anhalt Election Victory

If the Alternative for Germany (AfD) secures a state victory this Sunday, the party’s primary target will not be political rivals, but the press. With polls placing the party 17 points clear in Saxony-Anhalt, the radical-right group has already signaled that crippling public media is their first order of business.

The AfD’s strategy centers on dismantling the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), the regional public broadcaster serving Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Saxony. Lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund has branded the network “anti-German” and “woke,” vowing to terminate the treaty funding the broadcaster to stop what he calls “disinformation.” The threat is so acute that MDR recently began airing a bleep followed by silence after news bulletins to signal their potential closure. This move echoes the broader anti-media sentiment currently gaining traction among populist movements in Europe.

Siegmund, a 36-year-old former fragrance salesman, was a key figure at the 2023 Potsdam conference where participants discussed the “remigration” of foreigners. His approach to media scrutiny is tactical; when Der Spiegel labeled him the most dangerous man in Germany, he used the cover to boost his own profile at rallies. With the party polling at 42 percent in Saxony-Anhalt, the long-standing “firewall” established by mainstream parties to block the AfD from power faces a definitive test. Should the party seize control, the closure of public broadcasting would serve as a template for dismantling institutional checks on their power.
