Studsvik, GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T Partner for Swedish SMRs

The partnership targets two potential locations: the existing nuclear facility in Nyköping or a greenfield site in Valdemarsvik, where a development application was submitted earlier this year. While the agreement marks a formal commitment to move forward with technical, regulatory, and financing preparations, the parties have not yet reached a final investment decision. The project structure relies on a joint effort where Studsvik manages local permitting and community engagement, while GE Vernova Hitachi provides the reactor design and Samsung C&T leads construction delivery.

This move aligns with Sweden's updated 2026 legislation, which facilitates the expansion of nuclear capacity beyond the country's three existing power plants. By utilizing a phased, multi-unit approach, the companies hope to standardize deployment and integrate lessons learned from global projects like the Darlington New Nuclear Project in Canada. Financial backing for the development phase will be spearheaded by DS Investment Partners and GE Vernova Financial Services, though the companies noted that this announcement will not have a material impact on Studsvik’s 2026 earnings.
