The narrative follows Brett, a plesiosaur who prides himself on his species' long necks while dismissing pliosaurs as inferior. While on an errand to bake cookies for his mother, Brett falls victim to deep-sea bandits who trap him beneath a heavy rock. Despite his previous disdain for the group, his salvation arrives in the form of Kyle, a pliosaur who has spent his life enduring mockery from plesiosaurs. Kyle chooses to move the rock and fund Brett’s medical recovery, effectively forcing the injured plesiosaur to confront his inherited assumptions.

In the new children’s book The Good Pliosaur, author Spencer Patterson uses this aquatic conflict to examine how personal encounters can dismantle long-standing social biases.
Illustrated by Sam Calden, the book functions as an educational tool for families and teachers to discuss empathy and forgiveness. Patterson, a teacher education professor at John Brown University, designed the story to highlight that kindness carries the most weight when it breaches established social boundaries.
