ANSI Appoints R. Douglas Leonard Jr. to Lead Strategic Initiatives
R. Douglas Leonard Jr. will transition from his role as executive director of the ANSI National Accreditation Board to become the American National Standards Institute’s first chief of strategic initiatives. Starting October 1, 2026, he will partner with CEO Laurie E. Locascio to navigate the rapid evolution of global standards.
Warren Merkel, currently the vice president of engagement and strategy at ANAB, will step in as interim executive director. Merkel brings significant policy expertise from his previous career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. His new mandate focuses on maintaining the integrity of ANAB’s global accreditation services during the leadership transition. Leonard stated that he intends to prioritize the organization's role in bolstering U.S. competitiveness and fostering trusted innovation across government and industry sectors.
