Culturally Focused Suicide Prevention Program Earns National Registry Status

A 24.3% surge in suicide rates among Black individuals between 2018 and 2023 underscored a desperate need for specialized intervention. In response, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention launched a tailored program that has now gained formal recognition from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center for its measurable impact.

Culturally Focused Suicide Prevention Program Earns National Registry Status

The program, titled L.E.T.S. Save Lives, focuses on the specific racial and systemic factors influencing mental health outcomes within Black and African American communities. Since its introduction in 2024, the initiative has reached nearly 6,000 participants. Data collected from post-presentation surveys indicates that 98% of attendees feel equipped to identify suicide warning signs, marking a 13% improvement in confidence compared to their baseline before the training.

Developed in collaboration with an advisory committee of mental health experts, the curriculum is delivered by trusted community messengers. This approach aims to foster open dialogues about mental health and encourage help-seeking behaviors that often go ignored in traditional clinical settings. According to Trisha Calabrese, AFSP senior vice president of Programs, the recognition by the Best Practices Registry validates the necessity of education that reflects the unique experiences and strengths of the populations it serves. The program continues to expand, having hosted over 75 events between July 2025 and June 2026.
