Mo Willems’ Storybook World Comes to Life at Boston Children's Museum

The exhibit, co-organized by the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, transforms Willems’ best-selling books into a tactile, interactive playground. Visitors can navigate the space through a variety of hands-on activities, such as donning a wearable bus, engaging in phone conversations between Elephant Gerald and Piggie, or launching foam hot dogs at the famously persistent Pigeon. Beyond the games, the installation offers a behind-the-scenes look at the author's creative process, featuring original sketches and preliminary prints that highlight the techniques behind his iconic characters.

This immersive experience serves as both a celebration of children's literature and an exploration of the social and emotional themes found throughout Willems’ work. From animating old-time dances to costuming the Naked Mole Rat for a runway show, the activities are designed to encourage creative expression and collaborative play. The exhibit will remain on display at the Boston Children's Museum through January 3, 2027, providing a seasonal destination for families interested in the intersection of art, storytelling, and early childhood learning.
