Irvine-based Kiwibit has released the Bird Feeder 2 Pro, the first smart feeder to feature phase-detection auto-focus and 4K HDR imaging. Designed to capture rapid movements like hummingbird wingbeats, the device aims to transition backyard birdwatching from passive monitoring to high-definition documentation.
The device utilizes an upgraded image sensor to maintain sharp focus on birds as they change distance from the camera, while HDR processing balances detail across high-contrast lighting. For capturing fast-paced activity, a dedicated slow-motion mode records at 120 frames per second in 1080p, providing a detailed look at takeoffs and landings.
Beyond hardware, the feeder integrates with FeatherPal, an intelligence platform that automates species identification and tracks returning visitors. Users can curate a digital history of backyard activity, label individual birds, and generate shareable media clips. The system is managed through the Kiwibit app, which centralizes the identification and archival process.
To ensure continuous operation in outdoor environments, the feeder includes a 5,200 mAh removable battery paired with a 5-watt solar panel. The unit is built with an IP65-rated enclosure for weather resistance and features a 1.7-liter dual-compartment hopper for varied seed storage. Mounting options include wall, pole, or tree-strap configurations. The product is available starting September 15 through the company's website and Amazon.
